The Third Paradise. A revision of the mathematical symbol for infinity: two opposite circles and a central ring. The first Paradise is where humans and nature coexist in perfect harmony. The second Paradise is the man-made one. The Third Paradise represents the third phase of humankind, manifesting itself in the balanced connection between artifice and nature. It’s an invitation to take personal responsibility and adopt a global vision. Cittadellarte – Pistoletto Foundation, with the support of A2A and the Energy Bank Foundation – will be made of 16 heaps of fishing nets, representing the 16 municipalities of Lake Iseo. A string of LED lights will run across and around the fishing nets, creating Michelangelo Pistoletto’s famous reinterpretation of the mathematical sign of infinity. On the one hand, the art-work gives centre stage to the fishing nets, one of the island’s iconic symbols, and on the other hand, the physical nets become a metaphor for the interconnection between our destiny and that of society. The art-work is made of reused materials such as local fishing nets and the LED lights discarded from the works of Light is Life. It symbolises infinite rebirth and social innovation, reinforcing the conviction that art can and should foster community cooperation. The number 16 refers to the aggregation of Lake Iseo riverside municipalities, known as the “G16”, a network of local administrations that share views on community life issues and coordinate projects at the local level. Another symbol will be in the middle of the heap of the 16 fishing nets as a reminder of Goal 17 of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Goal 17 promotes global and local partnerships to address challenges and foster a more sustainable approach to the planet. Text by Fortunato D’Amico
